AOW Scientists FAQ
Have questions about how you can utilize the Army of Women to advance your breast cancer research?
The Love/Avon Partnership
The Love/Avon Army of Women is driven by two key partnerships that will accelerate research and prevent breast cancer: the partnership between Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation and the Avon Foundation, and the partnership between scientists and women.
For Researchers
The Army of Women is dedicated to accelerating research into the cause and prevention of breast cancer. Our goal is to form partnerships between women and scientists. The Army of Women volunteers are eager to work with any researcher who is involved in or contemplating research in understanding the cause and prevention of breast cancer.
All researchers must register with the Army of Women before they submit a project proposal. We look forward to aiding in your partnership with women to move beyond a cure and eradicate breast cancer once and for all.
Register!
If you are ready to submit an application and are interested in utilizing the Army of Women as part of your research plan, you will be asked to either submit a Pending Funding Application or the Funded Research Application. If you submit the Pending Research Application, and the project fits the criteria of the Army of Women, you will receive a letter of support, price list (for budget purposes), and description of the Army of Women for inclusion in your grant proposal.
Once you receive funding for your research project, you will have to come back to the Army of Women website, login into your account, and finish the application process. If you already have funding from a granting organization employing peer review and would like to access the Army of Women you should submit the Funded Research Application. At this point, your project will be evaluated by a scientist and an advocate from the Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) to confirm its eligibility for the Army of Women. The SAC does not intend to redo peer review, but we do want to make sure the project is feasible for the Army of Women and is ethical and safe in its design.
When your research project is approved by the Army of Women Scientific Advisory Committee and you have submitted to us all appropriate IRB approvals and required documents, the Army of Women staff will send out an e-blast about your project to all Army members and post the description of the study on the Army or Women website.
As women respond to the e-blast for your study, they will undergo a secondary eligibility screen. If you are collecting your own biological samples, we will forward to you the names of all eligible volunteers and you will be responsible for further follow up. If you are not collecting your own samples, the Army of Women will coordinate collection with one of our Army of Women centers. Researchers utilizing a center will be required to participate in a webcast about the study for the interested volunteers prior to the collection of any samples. The volunteers will be consented and appropriate data and/or samples will be obtained at an Army of Women Center and shipped to you according to your instructions.
